What to do at Panorama if you’re not a skier or boarder

If not everyone in your group is a skier, or you want a break from the mountain because your legs are tired, you’ll find plenty of fun things to do in the Columbia Valley. To get around, if you have to leave Panorama Mountain Resort - there is the option to use Uber or a free Invermere – Panorama shuttle.

Go snowmobiling with Toby Creek Adventures

Even if you’ve never been on a snowmobile before, you can have quite the adventure. Even better, Toby Creek Adventures is just a kilometer from Panorama Ski Resort. They give you a lesson on how to drive a snowmobile and put you on a practice loop until the guide feels confident in your ability.

Then you can zip off – perhaps up to gorgeous Paradise Hut, 16 km and 4000 feet higher. After checking out the former blacksmith shop for Atlas Silver Mine, explore a bit of the area and return to the trailhead, making a few stops along the way.

By the time you’ve finished, you’ll be a confident snowmobiler and ready to tackle more trails. Toby Creek Adventures offers everything from family-friendly outings to adrenaline inducing backcountry jaunts.

Go fat biking at Panorama

Rent a fat bike at Panorama and then head off on over 20 km of Nordic trails, but don’t bike in the ski tracks. When you need a breather, check out some of the roads around the resort. You might find it is easier going.

Fat biking at Panorama is an option

Try cross-country skiing at the Panorama Nordic Centre

The Panorama Nordic Centre at Greywolf is home to approximately 20 km of cross-country ski trails. One of the finest outings takes you up to Hale Hut where you can enjoy pretty mountain scenery along with a chance to warm up in the hut. Allow a half day to do the return outing.

There is also cross-country skiing at Lake Lillian on the way up to Panorama and on the Whiteway in Invermere. (See below.)

Beautiful views from Hale Hut

Skate, Bike or Ski the Whiteway

Invermere is home to a Guinness World Record holder – the Whiteway. It claims the title as the longest naturally frozen skating trail in the world. You have the option to skate the whole 29.8 km but there are shorter loops of varying length if you just want to give it a try. There are also stand-alone rinks near the entrance.

Sometimes, if you time it right and the ice is snow free, you can see the fish swimming below you!

When the ice is cleared, snow is moved to the side so cross-country ski trails can be made. It’s a wonderful place to ski – and fat bike, but dress warmly as the wind can really blow here.

Wonderful skating on the Whiteway

Biking the Whiteway is a great way to experience the beauty of the Columbia Valley

Snowshoe at Panorama Resort

If you want to enjoy the peace and beauty of nature, you can rent snowshoes at the Panorama Nordic Centre at Greywolf. There are approximately 12 km of trails running along scenic Toby Creek.

Paragliding anyone??

If you want an adrenaline rush on your visit to Panorama, why not try paragliding with Flying Max. He offers tandem flights over the Columbia Valley that are between 10 - 25 minutes long, depending on the day’s thermals. This is one of those once in a lifetime experiences to take advantage of.

Soak in either Radium Hot Springs or Fairmont Hot Springs

You’re probably going to have to spring for an Uber if you want to soak in Radium Hot Springs, but it will be worth every penny. They are a 20-minute drive away.

The springs are named for the radon that exists in trace but harmless quantities. The springs are just inside the Kootenay National Park boundary in a spectacular setting – so you will probably need a park pass to visit – unless the driver has one. Allow at least an hour for a long leisurely soak.

Another option is to visit the Fairmont Hot Springs, 22-minutes south of Invermere. It’s quite a different experience but you’ll have to be the judge of which one you prefer. Enjoy panoramic mountain views as you sink up to your neck in the soothing mineral-rich waters that are at a constant temperature of 39 C. They are Canada’s largest natural mineral hot springs.

There is also the option to use their sizable swimming pool. It’s kept at a lower temperature of 32 C so you don’t overheat when swimming.

Radium Hot Springs is a treat to visit in winter

Transportation to Panorama Mountain Resort from YYC Calgary International Airport

The driving time from Calgary Airport to Panorama is roughly 3.5 hours, so you won’t want to skimp on your transportation. This is important not only to ensure your comfort for such a lengthy ride, but also because winter weather often presents road hazards that are especially dangerous for those unaccustomed to driving area routes in such conditions. There aren’t any services once you enter Kootenay National Park, a particularly lonely feeling stretch of highway in winter,

A professional chauffeured transportation service is strongly recommended.

When you hire a seasoned driver who knows the roads well, you can sit back confident that your safety, comfort and security are in capable hands.

While there may be “inexpensive” shuttles for hire, be wary of trying to save a few dollars at the expense of your travel experience. Options such as these can cause multiple headaches, including rigid, fixed schedules, seating with strangers or even worse, poorly maintained vehicles that are:

  • Outdated / run-down
  • Not recently serviced
  • Lacking in amenities
  • Uncomfortable / cramped

The last thing you need when traveling to your skiing getaway is a ride that is unforgettable for all the wrong reasons.

You might see big-horned sheep when you drive to Radium Hot Springs
